More Than Just Violins...

Andrew Sutherland is a violin maker who is experienced in both the creation of new instruments and restoration of the old. Having trained at the Newark School of Violin Making in baroque and modern making (the course includes a basic training in more common repairs) he decided to spend some time working on older instruments in order to broaden his knowledge of both restoration and setup of violin family instruments.

Prior to training as a luthier,  Andrew studied with a sculptor in Cambridge in order to raise the quality of his woodwork in order to qualify for the course.

Having completed his initial training, Andrew then decided to spend some time in a more commercial atmosphere, where exposure to older instruments could influence his development as a luthier as well as give valuable experience in the repairer's craft.

So now, with ten years of experience and a fully qualified luthier, he has made the move to Steep Hill and has settled in Harding House which the late Dean of Lincoln Cathedral left in trust to the artisans of the city that they might carry on a fine tradition of arts and crafts and enrich the cultural life of the city.
